Bulgarian-born (1976) and based in the Netherlands, Hristina Tasheva is a visual artist whose work explores migration, identity, and the politics of memory. Working through a research-based approach, she combines contemporary photography with archival materials and textual elements.
She studied photography in the Netherlands, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and a Master of Arts in Photography from AKV|St. Joost in Breda.
Her most recent project, Far Away From Home, examines the contrasting histories of communism in the Netherlands and Bulgaria, juxtaposing Dutch communist resistance during WWII with the oppressive post-war communist regime in Bulgaria. Bringing together her own photography, archival images, found materials, and literary excerpts, the work considers how historical memory continues to shape contemporary identities and ideologies. The project received the 2024 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Award and the Athens Photo Festival Pick:24 Book Award, was selected for Best Dutch Book Designs 2023, and was shortlisted for the Paris Photo–Aperture Photobook of the Year Award 2023 and the Les Rencontres d’Arles 2023 Photo-Text Book Award.
